Mormon Battalion Historic Sites Award

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA OPTION

1. Visit the Mormon Battalion Historic Site in Old Town San Diego.a. Take the guided tour and use the interactive displays in the museum.b. Have your picture taken by the museum box camera.c. Learn how bricks were made by the Mormon Battalion.d. Pan for gold and learn the role the Mormon Battalion played in gold discovery.
2. View the video “More Precious Than Gold” with a leader, parent, or in the Historic Site theater.
3. Do at least one of the following:a. Visit Fort Stockton in San Diego, atop Presidio Hill. Read the plaques on the monuments and statue.b. Visit the Mission San Diego de Alcala where the Battalion first camped upon their arrival in San Diego.c. Visit the Mission San Luis Rey where the Battalion was garrisoned.d. Visit the markers for Lydia Hunter and Albert Dunham and the monument for the 21 dragoons killed in the Battle of San Pasqual located in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.e. Visit Box Canyon and Foot & Walker Pass in Anza-Borrego State Park, or the Warner’s Ranch renovated ranch house museum.f. Visit Fort Moore Memorial in downtown Los Angeles (Built by the Mormon Battalion).
4. Write of what you learned about the Mormon Battalion and the benefits they provided for their country, for California, for local communities, and for families. Include in your report the most interesting thing you did or saw in completing items 1-3 above. and why— (The report is to exceed 250 words– Use the back of application).

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA OPTION

1. Visit the Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma.a. Tour the replica of Sutter’s saw mill.b. Tour the Mormon Cabin.
2. Watch the video “More Precious Than Gold” with a leader, parent, or in the Park theater.
3. Do at least one of the following:a. Visit Mormon Island Memorial at Brown’s Point on Folsom Lake and the Mormon Island Cemetery on Green Valley Road.b. Visit Sutter’s Fort in downtown Sacramento. Learn about the various jobs performed by the Battalion veterans while they were there.c. Visit Pleasant Valley where they assembled for leaving the state to find their families (7 miles east of Placerville).d. Visit Tragedy Springs (near Silver Lake) on the Mormon Emigrant Trail and read the grave markers and the headstones of the ambushed and murdered Battalion veterans.
4. Write of what you learned about the Mormon Battalion and the benefits they provided for their country, for California, for local communities, and for families. RECEIVING AWARDS

1. Have the Director of the Mormon Battalion Historic Site in San Diego, or mail to the CPHF, Review reports from each applicant.
2. Pay the Director or Send a check for $2.00 for each patch requested.
